Technology companies know that the way an app or device looks is nearly as important to buyers as what it does. This is more prevalent in the business-to-consumer market, of course, where things that are flashy and glitzy get lots of attention. But do image and aesthetics matter when you’re buying something for your business?

The conventional wisdom would say they shouldn’t. When you’re buying tech for your business, it should theoretically be all about what the purchase does to increase sales or reduce expenses. Form factor need not be a consideration, especially when you’re making decisions that affect the bottom line.

In the real world, though, it’s not always that simple. Here are a couple of reasons you might want to consider whether your company’s technology has a “wow factor” to it…

Sleek Tech Can Sometimes Impress Customers, Clients, and Potential Employees

Have you ever walked into an office and been genuinely impressed by the decor or equipment? In some settings having fancy technology around can send a signal about the success of your business, or just the fact that your company is on the cutting edge.

That may or may not matter when it comes to your efforts to win new clients. Remember, though, that you might also want to impress the people who are thinking about working for you. They like to know that an employer invests in the company and its personnel.

When Your Tech Looks Outdated That Sends a Message, Too

In the same way that great tech can impress people, having obviously outdated equipment around your building or facility sends a subconscious signal, too. Again, this is something that might or might not matter to your business given how prominent your equipment is, who can see it, and whether prestige is an obvious consideration in your market.

It’s worth considering, though, that going without the kind of technology people see your peers and competitors having might create the unintentional effect of suggesting that you are behind the curve.

People are Visual Learners and Users (and That Matters Sometimes)

It’s strange but true: people like to use and play with things that look cool, and will avoid interacting with technology that isn’t as interesting or edgy. There are limits to this dynamic, of course, and having tech that seems too flashy or complicated can stop people from using it as well. As a general rule, though, your employees and customers are more likely to embrace a piece of technology that can help your company grow if it seems interesting. They want things to play with.

Would that make a specific upgrade or investment worth the cost? Maybe and maybe not, depending on how big of a difference it could make in the long run.

The Bottom Line on Flashy Tech

Obviously, the way the device or app looks shouldn’t be the deciding factor on whether you buy it for your business or not. But, if you’re in a situation where you aren’t sure whether to make a choice, investment, or upgrade, take a moment to think about the various options and what they do for your company’s image. It may or may not make the difference, but it is worth considering.
